JULY 2021 - Let's Finish Yesterday's Algebra Problem!

July 21, 2021

When you think about it, math always comes down to the basics. Let's look at the example below - it is an algebra problem that would get most people stuck.

3x + 15 = 45 - 2x

Step one - we need to combine like terms which are 3x and -2x and 15 and 45 - we combine like terms by doing the opposite operation

We'll start with combining 3x and -2x. The opposite operation of -2x is +2x. So we add 2x to each side. That gets rid of 2x on the right side of the equal sign and combines it with 3x on left side of the equal sign.

3x + 15 = 45 - 2x

+2x                +2x

Can it get anymore basic than that - 3 +2?!

Step two - we need to combine like terms 15 and 45 - just like in step one, we combine like terms by doing the opposite operation

The opposite operation of 15 is -15. So we subtract 15 from each side. That gets rid of 15 on the left side of the equal sign and combines it with 45 on the right side of the equal sign.

5x + 15 = 45

      -15    -15

So basic! 15 -15 = 0 and 45 - 15 = 30 - Can it get anymore basic than that?!

5x = 45

Step three - now all terms are combined but we need to solve for x. Most of us can now see that x = 9, but how?

We still do the opposite operation, in this case, x is being multiplied by the 5 (5x). The opposite of multiplication is division.

So we divide each side by 5

5x = 45

/5     /5

x = 9

So basic! 5x / 5 = 1x or simply, x. 45 /5 = 9, So x = 9

BASIC MATH!!

See, even algebra comes back to basic math. All we did was add in step one, subtract in step two and divide in step three!
